Toronto, Ontario
Nadine Alexeev is a Russian/Ukrainian contemporary painter and textiles artist based in Toronto.
She is a first generation Canadian whose parents grew up in the USSR. As a result of this displacement and loss of ethnic identity, her work aims to connect to the physical body as the homeplace. She sees the body as the vessel for embodied identity and lived experience, translating these concepts into paint and other medias. Nadine hopes that in sharing her work, she can challenge viewersโ own perceptions of reality and highlight the subjectivity of art.
Her art practice is informed by the distortion of reality to her own warped perceptions, blending a grotesque surrealist style with vibrant colour palettes, in an attempt to visually convey her feelings of a distorted personal identity.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing & Painting) at OCAD University, she enjoys surrounding herself with other creatives and engaging in dialogue that contextualises the diverse perspectives of artists and art lovers in Toronto.
Q+A
Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?
Having art surround us is so vital; it serves as a form of self-expression, allowing individuals to showcase their identities and interests. It has the power to evoke emotions, inspire creativity, and stimulate the mind. It provides a connection to culture and society, enriching experiences and broadening perspectives.
Which piece of art you've created is your favourite, and why?
My favorite piece of mine is 'What Are You Looking At?' (2024). It was a breakaway piece that has now inspired a new figurative style of mine that I would like to keep exploring as well as driving me to think about more personal concepts that I strongly identify with.
Coffees per day and from where
I love coffee! Grabbing one or two iced coffees a day from Coffee Exchange at The Grange is a must for long hours in the OCAD studios.
Favourite medium
I have been loyal to oil paint ever since I first tried it a couple years ago. Prior to this discovery, I primarily worked with acrylic paint, but oil allows me to flow freely without the quick drying time of acrylic paints in the studio.
What artists do you admire right now?
The artists I admire most right now are the friends I have within the creative community. I love seeing what is being created around me, fellow students inspire me the most, seeing how they express their ideas and what drives them.
